About
So You Want to Be an Artist is a contest that gives young artists from all over Canada the opportunity to be seen in the national spotlight. Are you passionate about art? Create something you care about and submit it today! Then it’s up to your friends, family, classmates and anyone else to vote for your art. The 12 submissions with the most votes will be displayed at the National Gallery of Canada, where our panel of accomplished judges will pick the best ones.
This is your chance to get your artwork out into the world. So grab your paintbrush, sketchbook, iPad, camera or spray can and be creative!
Judges
We’ve scoured the nation high and low and brought together an über-awesome jury of experts from different areas of the arts. We’ve got a contemporary artist, a graphic designer working in Nunavut, a professor at one of Canada’s leading art universities, an art critic and a journalist - and they want to see what you’ve got! At the beginning of June, judges will be looking at the 12 artworks with the most votes.

Rules
There are three phases to the contest:
- Submit your artwork image and an artist statement. The contest opens on January 24 and will run until March 18, 2012. Make sure you submit on time, because no submissions will be accepted after 11:59 pm EST on March 18th!
- Next, you have to get people to vote for your artwork. Voting happens from March 26 to April 30, 2012.
- The 12 artworks with the most votes will be displayed at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa from June 2 to July 3, 2012. A jury of experts will come to the Gallery on June 4 to select the top three winners. Winners will be announced in June.
You have to be a resident of Canada and be 16 to 19 years old as of June 4, 2012 to be eligible.
You can only submit one 2-dimensional artwork - be creative! Send us photography, drawing, painting, etc. Also, make sure your artwork fits within the dimensions of 30 cm X 40 cm so that it will fit in our display if you make it into the top 12.
Your artwork must be original. If it includes images from popular culture, like the image of a famous person, an album cover, or a company logo, you have to prove that you have permission to include it in your artwork; otherwise your submission will be disqualified.
Take the time to read through all of the official rules for more details and for information on the prizes. It’s a good idea to get your parents to read them too.
